Beethoven - Quartetto Klimt

L. van Beethoven: Symphony No. 3 in E-flat major, Op. 55
02 june 2026 - Mantova - Teatro Bibiena - 17:30

The Quartetto Klimt, a leading ensemble in the international chamber music scene, takes on one of the most demanding challenges in the repertoire: rendering the monumentality of Ludwig van Beethoven's Third Symphony through the reduced forces of the piano quartet. In the transcription by Ferdinand Ries — Beethoven's pupil and friend — the symphonic substance of the Eroica is condensed without losing any of its dramatic power or ideal tension.

Composed between 1802 and 1804, the Symphony was initially conceived in connection with the figure of Napoleon, later repudiated by Beethoven in favour of a more universal idea of heroism. The opening movement, Allegro con brio, asserts itself through its propulsive energy and the continuous development of its thematic material. This is followed by the celebrated Marcia funebre. Adagio assai, a moment of intense expressive depth in which mourning takes on a collective and symbolic dimension. The Scherzo. Allegro vivace introduces a new vitality, while the finale traces a broad arc of transformation leading to a conclusion of affirmative and luminous character.

In the Teatro Bibiena, the closeness between performers and audience amplifies the immersive power of this chamber reading, revealing the Eroica in its most immediate and vibrant dimension.
